Becoming a Community

"As the area communities grow, I believe that both CSUMB and the communities will grow together."

"I've learned just how important community involvement is. When I started here at CSUMB I was quite selfish. Now I'm trying to change that."

--Marc Antosch
Visual and Public Art Major

"California State University, Monterey Bay is truly becoming a community--a very special CSUMB college community that is an integral part of the region we serve. CSUMB is now entering its third academic year, forming mutually beneficial relationships with its students, faculty, staff, business partners, community groups, local area residents, government officials, and learners all over the globe."

"It has been a remarkable past few years of achievements. We graduated our first 152 undergraduate students in May 1997. We also graduated our second group of teacher credential students, having now awarded a total of 88 teacher credential certificates, providing the world with wonderfully qualified new educators."

--Dr. Peter Smith
CSUMB Founding President

The California State University, Monterey Bay 1997-1998 catalog was printed in full color and is ready for the fall semester of 1997. It includes pictures and quotes from the campus community on nearly every page. The back page exemplifies the work in progress that CSUMB represents by including a panoramic photo of the 1997 campus community, a 1996 photo of the CSUMB community, and a photo of construction in the campus center from 1995. It is easy to see just how far we've come!

"Working closely with the community and all levels of government, we surmounted unbelievable obstacles from the day that CSUMB was proposed. To literally create CSUMB out of these abandoned barracks was nothing short of a miracle."

--Sam Karas
Retired Supervisor of Monterey Co. 5th District

"The most interesting thing about CSUMB is the positiveness that goes along with being a part of something still in the making."

-- Jennifer Figueroa
Earth Systems Science & Policy Major
