FOAA held its latest panel discussion entitled "Fort Ord Echoes, Transitions and Impact, 1940-1994" on Sunday, February 22. This discussion was part of its much heralded history lecture program scheduled for selected dates and locations on Fort Ord.
Master of ceremony and prime organizer MG Bill Gourley and a distinguished panel, which included GEN Sal Matheson, GEN James E. Moore Jr., COL Dan Devlin, LTC John McCutchon, CSM Charles Jackson, Monterey Mayor Dan Albert, and Dr. Steve Payne, addressed a number of themes.
Discussion topics included Fort Ord as a training center in its early years, desegregation and integration of the U.S. Army by Dr. Payne, the modern volunteer army, Operation "Just Cause", the deployment to Panama, Fort Ord's transition from a training mission to a permanent divisional post, growth and impact on local communities by Mayor Albert, and the role of the U.S. Army today on the Monterey Peninsula by COL Devlin.
The event was a great success based upon the number of people in the audience. The next program will take place Sunday, May 10; the discussion topic will be announced.

Recently two relatives of Fort Ord's namesake, GEN Edward O.C. Ord, have joined FOAA. GEN Ord's great-grandson and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Edward O.C. Ord of California, and the great-great-granddaughter of GEN Ord, 2LT Isabel Ord, U.S. Army Reserve, are now members. We welcome them to FOAA and its mission of preserving the history of this former base and assisting education at CSUMB.

FOAA has recently welcomed two new board members from CSUMB: student Nikki Sannicolous and faculty member Dr. Gerald Shenk. Dr. Shenk is part of CSUMB's Social and Behavioral Sciences Center, concentrating in war and society with an emphasis on issues of race and gender.
When asked in an electronic interview what attracted him to the organization, he replied, "The mission to preserve and promote public understanding of the histories of Fort Ord. I also believe FOAA can be the vehicle by which CSUMB maintains a healthy, two-way relationship with the veteran's community in the Monterey Bay region."
For the future of FOAA, of which he will be an integral part, Dr. Shenk sees, "establishing and maintaining a worldwide network of individuals with ties to Fort Ord. Creating a historic preservation program and, I hope, a library and historical archive of Fort Ord."

Advisory Board Member LTG James E. Moore Jr. has recently been named a CSUMB Distinguished Fellow. This is the first year that the University has designated regional leaders as Distinguished Fellows of the University. He will be installed Thursday, May 21, at the inaugural "Celebration of Community," a fund-raising dinner for scholarships and the arts at CSUMB.
Other Distinguished Fellows to be honored at the event include CSU Chancellor Charles Reed and Former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, also a FOAA member. FOAA members are urged to attend this worthwhile event. For more information call 582-3090.

On Sunday, May 3, at the Stilwell Community Center the Special Events Committee will sponsor a program for members which outlines what will become of the former Fort Ord portion occupied by CSUMB. The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. and include a light lunch. CSUMB staff will provide a presentation on the current status of reuse and future plans for our old "campus."
The presentation will be followed by a bus tour of the campus with narration provided by students and a team of "alumni" from FOAA. SGM Richard Higdem and MSG Richard Krieder have agreed to provide some historical perspective to the tour. Students and faculty are encouraged to attend the tour. More information is available through the special events committee chairman John Wilmot at 384-0615.

The FOAA World Wide Web site has been submitted to compete for the Ford Motor Company Fund gold medal award for top new media entry in alumni relations. This prestigious award is given by the Council for Support and Advancement of Education to recognize quality communications projects.
If you have not already visited our Web site, we encourage you to do so at this address: http://foaa.monterey.edu. This site contains an electronic form for mailing comments and suggestions so that we can further improve this service. FOAA's industrious Web master is eager to receive member input.

The Membership Committee reports that the renewal campaign is still in full swing. Over 70 percent of the individual members have renewed. If you have not yet renewed, please take action now to rejoin and support the organzation. Several of our organizational members have already re-up'd.
We welcome back the Monterey Bay E-9 Association and Marina Rotary. American Legion Post 694 and Central Coast Federal Credit Union are renewing this month. With the support of these members and the new organizations demonstrating support for our goals, we will succeed.

COL Charles Goman recently presented FOAA with historic photos of the Drill Sergeant statue at its original location on 12th Street.
