FOAA Scholarship Awards

On Monday, September 29, 1997, FOAA awarded its first two scholarships during a ceremony held on the California State University, Monterey Bay campus. The two deserving CSUMB students selected for their exemplary credentials were Muriel Stettler and Paul Tomasi. The scholarship awards were named in honor of General Stilwell and General Ord. Each award was for a full semester's tuition.

Muriel Stettler is a liberal studies and community collaborative studies major at CSUMB who also works in the university's Advancement office.

Paul Tomasi also majors in Liberal Studies and works for the university's Public Safety office.

The ceremony took place in CSUMB's Library Learning Complex, no doubt a place these two scholarship winners are quite familiar with. More than 50 alumni, community members, CSUMB staff and faculty attended the event.

In addition, General Richard L. Ord III, CSUMB Founding President Dr. Peter Smith, and General Stilwell's daughter, her husband, and his grandson attended the ceremony. John McCutchon adds, "The attendance of General Stilwell's family gives the ceremony additional significance and makes it that much more special."

Dr. Peter Smith kicked things off by addressing the audience. The awards ceremony was not all business however; when asked if there was any moment that had stood out, Muriel, turning a shade red, admitted, "I think I was a little embarrassed when I gave Peter Smith a kiss on the cheek and General Ord asked me where his was."

What does Muriel Stettler see for the future of the Fort Ord Alumni Association? "I see the membership growing and being a major partner with CSUMB in scholarships and public recognition. I see FOAA as being the link between what was and what is to be. They are the keeper of the flame." It is thrilling that such an elegant and honorable description of the Fort Ord Alumni Association come from one of its first scholarship recipients.

Seaside Will Retain Building and Street Names

The Seaside City Council passed Resolution No. 97 - 58. on June19th, 1997, to retain street names in the former Fort Ord area within the city limits of Seaside.

By taking this action the Seaside City Council demonstrated theircommitment to develop the former fort for civilian use, while preserving its history.

City of Seaside Resolution No. 97-58.

Seaside is the second community in the area to do so. Marina City

Council had passed a resolution to retain street names on the former fort on March 18.

In the resolution the city's council stated that this way key names of individuals and places in the history of the U.S. Army and the history of the former Fort Ord will be memorialized. Regardless if they are nationally famous. "...the city of Seaside will be enhanced by our effort to retain these footnotes in history and incorporate them into the heritage of the city." Our thanks to the City Council of Seaside.

Strategic Planning

On Tuesday, November 4, 1997, the Fort Ord Alumni Association held its strategic planning workshop at California State University, Monterey Bay. All association members were invited to discuss the future development of the organization. Donna Johnson Marketing has been hired to help FOAA plan its immediate and long term goals which include increasing membership, strengthening the organization, preserving its history, and expanding educational opportunities at CSUMB.

Taking a Mulligan

Unfortunately, the Fort Ord Alumni Association's inaugural golf tournament schedualed for November 5, 1997, at picturesque Rancho Canada golf club in Carmel was canceled.

As golfers know, one shot in the rough doesn't mean there isn't another ball in the bag.
