November 23rd Open House On November 23, 1996, the Fort Ord Alumni Association held the first "Open House" for the Association members, the CSUMB family, and the interested community members. With five historical displays and university-specific displays to enjoy, the response from those attending was great. Nearly 200 former "alumni" of Fort Ord showed up to see what the Association was and where the ![]() Mrs. Frances Kelly, a Fort Ord alumni, assists at the busy membership table.

They found that they were the Association, and that the University was developing their old "campus" and was committed to preserving their history with the Association's support. The membership table was busy and many new members joined. If you haven't joined, send in your membership application now. Please be sure to include any interests in committee participation with the application. The next major step of the Association is the formation of the working committees. The Fort Ord Alumni Association has gone on line with a new Web site located at:

(www.monterey.edu/foaa for AOL) Through the addition of this Web site, the former alumni of Fort Ord now possess the ability to keep up-to-date on the latest news and events concerning the organization, with a calendar of events, a membership directory, and many pictures from Fort Ord's past history, as well as pictures of recent events. This site provides links to other military facilities, which the alumni may find useful. The FOAA Web site may also be accessed by going to the CSU Monterey Bay home page, and clicking on the Fort Ord Alumni Association link, located towards the top of the home page. ![]() Mrs. Sally Smith & Colonel Daniel Devlin take advantage of the Internet, viewing the new FOAA Web site. |

Several of our members have already shared "pieces of our history." Items have included photographs, training cycle books, and published booklets on the post and units here at Fort Ord. All of these items are being catalogued and preserved by the Assocation for future use in our efforts to help CSUMB remember the origin of the campus. Many thanks to Walter Avery, Jerry Nevarez, Cyndi Martinez, Richard Higdem, Richard Ofenloch, Kevin Moore, and many others for their contributions. Several of these items have already been included in student projects as they document and explore the roots of the University.

Central Coast Federal Credit Union of Marina, a familiar name to many
Fort Ord alumni, became the first organizational member and supporter of
the Association in December 1996. Welcome and thank you! Now you can surprise your alumnus of Fort Ord with an un-usual gift: membership in a fast-growing association of former veterans and family members who are working to preserve the history they helped create. Membership also represents an investment in the future by providing scholarship funds to de-scendants of those same alumni of Fort Ord. Just fill out the gift membership certificate and send it in with the membership dues. We will then send the newest alumnus a welcome letter and the membership pin in your name. What could be easier and more meaningful? Now is the time to recognize the contributions of your veteran. |
John McCutchon,
secretary/treasurer of FOAA Advisory Board, discusses program with alumnus. Defining The Association On Saturday, February 22, 1997, the members of the Association will meet to develop the working committees and refine the direction and goals for the coming year. Now is the time for you to participate in that operational planning. You will receive a letter giving the details and requesting your participation prior to this newsletter. If not, please call the project coordinator at (408) 582-4116 if you would like to attend. Mr. Roger Bunting, U.S. Army (Retired), will be providing his services to ensure that we get the most out of the session. Roger consults with many organizations and assists them in strategic and operational planning. The FOAA is very fortunate to have his help in our first year of operation. Please hold the date open and plan to participate in developing the Assocation's program. |
